From Ottoman Turkish یاغمق (yağmak, to rain, to come down in a shower), from Proto-Turkic *yag- (to rain).[1]

Cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (yaɣ-, to pour, rain), Azerbaijani yağmaq, Bashkir яуыу (yawıw), Kazakh жауу (jauu), Kyrgyz жаа (jaa), Khakas чаарға (çaarğa), Turkmen ýagmak, Tuvan чаар (çaar), Uzbek yogʻmoq.
