From Proto-West Germanic *wunskabarn, from Proto-Germanic *wunskabarną. Cognate with Old Norse óskabarn. Equivalent to wūsc (“wish”) + bearn (“child”). Compare also Middle High German wunschkint (“adopted child”) and Old Norse óskasunr (“adopted son”).
