From Proto-Algonquian *wiᐧkweᐧhsi (“birch”). Cognate with Cree waskway/ᐊᐧᐢᑲᐧᕀ (ayskayy, “birch”), Penobscot wìkʷesk (“birch”), Menominee wīkīh (“birch”), Montagnais ushkuai (“birch”).
