From Proto-Polynesian *fara (compare with Hawaiian hala, Pandanus tectorius), from Proto-Oceanic *padran, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *paŋdan, from Proto-Austronesian *paŋudaN originally referring to the pandanus (compare with Malay pandan, any species in general esp. Pandanus amaryllifolius).[1]
