From Dutch weduwe, from Middle Dutch weduwe, Old Dutch *widuwa, from Proto-West Germanic *widuwā, from Proto-Germanic *widuwǭ, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁widʰéwh₂ (widow). The second reduced syllable was provided with a secondary stress in Afrikaans; compare skaduwee.
