A Finno-Mordvinic derivation from the same root as in vedama. Cognate to Finnish vedus (“draught animal”), Erzya ведрекш (vedŕekš), ведяка (veďaka, “calf, heifer”), and Moksha ведраж (vedraž, “heifer”).
