From a Slavic language, perhaps from Russian, compare Old Russian воево́да (vojevóda, “commander of an army”), Serbo-Croatian vojvoda (“duke”), Polish wojewoda (“general, governor”). Ultimately, from Proto-Slavic *vojevoda, from Proto-Slavic *vojь (“army”) + *voditi (“to lead”).
