From Proto-Finnic *vaippa, borrowed from Proto-Germanic *waipaz (compare Old Norse veipa, veipr (“headscarf, kerchief”) and Gothic 𐍅𐌰𐌹𐍀𐍃 (waips, “crown, wreath”)). Cognate with Votic vaippa (“carpet”) and Finnish vaippa (“diaper; mantle, cloak, robe”).
