From a Vulgar Latin root *horrīre, from Latin horrēre, present active infinitive of horreō (“I am afraid”) (other forms or parts of the verb from horrēscere, horrēscō as with many other 4th conjugation verbs); compare Aromanian urãscu; compare change in meaning also in Albanian urrej (“to hate”), Occitan orrir (“to hate, despise”).
