  1. From Proto-Indo-European *uǵʰ-eh₂, from the root *weǵʰ- (to bring, carry),[1][2] whence also Gothic 𐍅𐌹𐌲𐍃 (wigs, way, road).
  2. From Proto-Albanian *wadā, from Proto-Indo-European *wodʰ-eh₂, from the root *wedʰ- (to beat, strike),[3] whence also Sanskrit वध् (vadh, kill, strike).
  3. Akin or borrowed from Ancient Greek ὁδός (hodós, way, road).[4]
  4. From Proto-Indo-European *wedʰ- (to lead).

By some identified as the source of Ancient Greek οὔθα (oútha, dust; way, road).[5]
