From Middle Welsh tyghet, from Proto-Brythonic *tonked, from Proto-Celtic *tonketos (compare Old Irish toceth, tocad), from Proto-Indo-European *tenk- (“be suitable”); compare Gothic 𐌸𐌴𐌹𐌷𐌰𐌽 (þeihan, “to prosper”).
