Compound of tulang (“bone”) + rawan (“fragile; young, smooth”). Compare to Chinese 軟骨/软骨 (ruǎngǔ, “cartilage”, literally “soft; weak + bone”) and Dutch kraakbeen (literally “crack bone”).
