tuinwijk
Dutch
Etymology
Compound of tuin (“garden”) + wijk (“quarter, neighbourhood”). First attested in the 1900s. The suggestion that it is a shortened form of tuinstadwijk is not tenable in light of that word's later attestation.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈtœy̯n.ʋɛi̯k/
Audio (file) - Hyphenation: tuin‧wijk
Noun
tuinwijk f (plural tuinwijken, diminutive tuinwijkje n)
- A mostly low-rise suburb with many characteristics of a village, loosely based on the garden city model.
Usage notes
A tuinwijk is usually smaller than a tuindorp.
