From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(t)sam (hair (of head)). Cognate with Burmese ဆံ (hcam, hair (of head)), Old Chinese (long hair), Tibetan སམ་དལ (sam dal, moustache) and Jingpho sam (hair). Compare Lhao Vo xae, Zaiwa cam and Hpon ăshɛ́.
