trốc gối

Vietnamese

Alternative forms

  • trôốc cúi, trốc cúi (dialects with *-l > /j/ and less affected by lenition)
  • trôốc cún, trốc cún (dialects with *-l > /n/ and less affected by lenition)
  • trôốc gúi, trốc gúi (dialects with *-l > /j/ and more affected by lenition)

Etymology

trốc (head) + gối (knee). See đầu gối.

While this form is undoubtedly "written down", the actual existence and usage of it is not clear, as in most of the North Central dialects where equivalents of this are used, the vowel nucleus of the second morpheme is usually the conservative unlowered /u/ (see the forms above). Therefore, trốc gối might just be a written compromise between the actual forms used in real life with the "standard written" mainstream gối.
