Usage notes
  • All non-ngang and non-huyền tones are considered trắc tones, which is a terminology derived from and equivalent to Middle Chinese 仄聲 (oblique tones), which involved changing contour pitches. In Sino-Vietnamese morphemes, the sắc and hỏi tones were placed on Middle Chinese syllables that began with a 聲母声母 (qīng shēngmǔ, voiceless obstruent onset), and the nặng and ngã tones were placed on syllables that began with a 聲母声母 (zhuó shēngmǔ, voiced obstruent or sonorant onset).
