From Proto-Inuit *tuu- (tusk, ivory, ice pick, chisel, poke), from Proto-Eskimo *tuɣǝ- (tusk, to pick with sharp instrument). Compare tuugaaq (ivory, tusk), and toorpaa (thrusts at).
