From Old Swedish tiæra, from Old Norse tjara, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *terwą. Cognate with Danish tjære, Norwegian tjære, Icelandic tjara, Faroese tjøra, Dutch teer, German Teer and English tar. Also cognate with Finnish terva, Estonian tõrv and Northern Sami darvi. Doublet of töre.
