Learned borrowing from New Latin thyreoīdēs, itself borrowed from Ancient Greek θῠρεοειδής (thureoeidḗs, “shield-shaped”), from θῠρεός (thureós, “oblong shield”) + -ειδής (-eidḗs, “-form, -like”).
