From Middle English tholemod, from Old English þolmōd, þolemōd (“forbearing, patient, of a patient disposition; patience, endurance”), equivalent to thole + mood. Cognate with Icelandic þolinmóður (“patient”), Swedish tålmodig (“patient”), Danish tålmodig (“patient”).
