Etymology 2

Sino-Vietnamese word from (to listen).

Its Middle Chinese ancestor (MC theng) "to listen" would have yielded regularly SV reflex **thinh; this attested reflex, with sắc-tone (which suggests a Middle Chinese ancestor with departing tone & unvoiced initial), possibly has arisen from confusion with (MC thengH) "to administer, to adjudicate", which had departing tone.

Adjective

thính
