Inherited from Malay tedung (“cobra”), probably from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t1ɗɔɔŋ (“stalk, tail”) (compare Old Javanese *taruṅ, Banjarese tadung (“snake”) and Balinese ᬢᭂᬤᬸᬂ (tedung)).
