Compound of tahun (“year”) + ajaran (“teaching”), literally "teaching year", calque of Dutch leerjaar (“teaching year”).
Usage notes
The term is commonly used for primary and secondary education. Tertiary education use tahun akademik instead. Both are abbreviated as TA.
