tạnh
Vietnamese
Etymology
Unclear. Either:
- Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 晴 (“clear (of weather)”, SV: tình); if true, then it was probably a rather late loan from a regional Sinitic lect; the tonal correspondence is irregular for an early loan; or,
- Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 靜 (“to be still”, SV: tĩnh, tịnh) or non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese 靖 (“"to be still" > "to still"”, SV: tĩnh, tịnh); if true, that the tonal, register, and rhyme correspondences are still typical for an early loan.
