tạnh

Vietnamese

Etymology

Unclear. Either:

  • Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (clear (of weather), SV: tình); if true, then it was probably a rather late loan from a regional Sinitic lect; the tonal correspondence is irregular for an early loan; or,
  • Non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese (to be still, SV: tĩnh, tịnh) or non-Sino-Vietnamese reading of Chinese ("to be still" > "to still", SV: tĩnh, tịnh); if true, that the tonal, register, and rhyme correspondences are still typical for an early loan.
