From Proto-Slavic *strašidlo, from *strȃxъ. By surface analysis, tšašyś (to haunt) + -dło, from tšach (fear). Cognate with Slovak strašidlo, Czech strašidlo, Polish straszydło, Kashubian strašédło, Polabian strosaidłü, Serbo-Croatian страшило.
