From Proto-Oghuz [Term?]. Compare Karakhanid [script needed] (tüwek), a Turkic onomatopoeia attested in Dīwān Luḡāt at-Turk meaning a blowpipe shooting pebbles against birds.
Cognate with Turkish tüfek, Azerbaijani tüfəng, Nogai туьбек (tübek), etc.
