From Middle Low German töven, whence also Swedish töva, from or related to Proto-Germanic *tabjan-, from Proto-Indo-European *dobʰ-éie-, see also Sanskrit दिप्सति (dipsati, “to deceive”). Cognate with Dutch toeven.
