Usage notes
Traditionally, this word precedes the noun that it modifies, for example tân cử tổng thống (literally “president-elect”). By contrast, the usual order in Vietnamese is noun-adjective order, especially when a compound word modifies another compound word. Usage in Vietnam has shifted in favor of noun-adjective order, i.e., tổng thống tân cử. However, tân tổng thống remains common.
