Etymology

From Ancient Greek σύνοδος (súnodos, assembly, meeting) – from σύν (sún, with) (English syn-) + ὁδός (hodós, way, path).

Compare also with the term סַנְהֶדְרִין (sunédrion) common throughout Hebrew Talmudic literature.
