From Russian сурика́т (surikát), Polish surykatka, Italian suricato, English suricate, all from French suricate, of uncertain origin; either from a South African language or a blend of Surinam (of which the animal's origin was erroneously reported by Buffon in 1765) + Afrikaans meerkat.
