steenbreek

Dutch

Etymology

From Middle Dutch steenbreke; compare Old High German steinbrehha, Old Saxon stēnbreka. By surface analysis, steen (stone) + breken (to break), thus literally, stone-breaker. The suffix -e (corresponding to the Germanic agent noun suffix *) visible in the Middle Dutch has mostly vanished in Modern Dutch.
