sprogti

Lithuanian

Etymology

Cognate with Latvian sprâgt (to burst, to blast). Perhaps from a g-extension of Proto-Indo-European *(s)perH- (to trample, to spurn) > *sprh₂eg- (to crack, to bust), akin to Proto-Slavic *pьrga (pollen, bloom), Proto-Germanic *sprekaną (to speak), Ancient Greek σφρᾱγῑ́ς (sphrāgī́s, seal), σφαραγέομαι (spharagéomai, to crackle, to sizzle).

Possibly further akin to Lithuanian spragė́ti (to click).
