Perhaps from a g-extension of Proto-Indo-European *(s)perH- (“to trample, to spurn”) > *sprh₂eg- (“to crack, to bust”), akin to Proto-Slavic *pьrga (“pollen, bloom”), Proto-Germanic *sprekaną (“to speak”), Ancient Greek σφρᾱγῑ́ς (sphrāgī́s, “seal”), σφαραγέομαι (spharagéomai, “to crackle, to sizzle”).

Possibly further akin to Lithuanian spragė́ti (“to click”).
