From Old Irish samrad, from a compound of Proto-Celtic *samos (“summer”) (compare Welsh haf), from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-h₂-ó- (compare Old English sumor, Old Armenian ամառն (amaṙn)). Cognate with Irish samhradh and Scottish Gaelic samhradh.
