Inherited from Proto-Slavic *snǫbiti, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)newbʰ- (to wed, to match), possibly related to *(s)neh₁- (to fasten, to thread). Cognate with Latin nūbō (to get married) and akin to Ancient Greek νῠ́μφη (númphē, bride).
