Borrwoed from Middle Low German schelen, from Proto-Germanic *skilhijaną (to squint), cf. also German schielen. Derived from the adjective Proto-Germanic *skelhaz, *skelgaz (wry, oblique), cf. Old Norse skjalgr (squinty), German scheel (squinty).
