Swedish

Etymology

From Old Norse skeyta (to join, take care of)

Pronunciation

IPA(key): /²ɧøːˌta/

  • (file)

Verb

sköta (present sköter, preterite skötte, supine skött, imperative sköt)

  1. (sometimes followed by om) to manage to, to maintain, to care for, to nurse
    Nisse sköter finanserna
    Nisse manages the finances
    Patienten sköts av syster Bengt
The patient is cared for by sister Bengt
  2. (reflexive) to behave
    han kunde inte sköta sig
    he could not behave
(literally, “he could not take care of himself”)

Usage notes

Bit more of a "care for" nuance when of people and followed by om. "Jag ska sköta om dig" (I will care for you) sounds better than "Jag ska sköta dig" (I will take care of/manage you, ish).
