Borrowed from German Zigeuner, from Greek τσιγγάνος (tsingános), older Ἀθίγγανος (Athínganos), originally the name of a Christian sect. A compound of ἀ- (a-, “un-”) + θιγγάνω (thingánō, “to touch”).
