shpresë

Albanian

Etymology

Disputed. Either:

  1. From sh- (dis-, ex-, de-) + pres (wait) + (-ing, -ion, noun suffix, f.) > shpresë (waiting).
Same construct as in Latin ex- + spectō + -ātiō > exspectātiō (waiting, suspense).
Or like construct in German er- + wart + -ung > Erwartung (expectation).
  2. From Latin sperans, sperantia, from spero (hope). Compare Albanian shpërej "to hope" (doublet of shpresoj, itself from shpresë) from Latin sperāre.[1]

  • IPA(key): [ʃpɾɛs] (Gheg)
