Etymology

Variant of Giordano Bruno's aphorism (1582) se non è vero, è molto ben trovato (“even if it is not true, it is a very good fabrication”).[1] In Anton Francesco Doni's I Marmi (1552), a similar phrase was recorded: "Fatti pure in lá; non mi toccar con essa: se non è vero, egli è stato un bel trovato".[2]
