Probably from an older form *scu(i)pi, from Vulgar Latin root *scupīre, from *escopīre, or *excuppere, from Late Latin *exconspuere, ultimately from Latin conspuere, present active infinitive of conspuō, from spuō. Compare Spanish escupir, Portuguese cuspir. Compare also Aromanian ascuchiu.
