From Middle High German smæhen, from Old High German smāhen, from Proto-Germanic *smēhijaną (to reduce; belittle; despise), from Proto-Indo-European *smēyg- (small, thin, delicate). See also Dutch smaad (slander), Proto-Germanic *smikraz (fine, fair), Proto-Germanic *smēhaz (little).[1]
