Etymology

For Vulgar Latin *scarafaius (cf. 10th c. glosses scarafagius), a local, perhaps Oscanized variant of Latin scarabaeus (scarab, dung beetle), of uncertain origin. This variant is also reflected by several Provencal forms.[1] Compare Sicilian scravagghiu.
