scai
Romanian
Etymology
Either from Serbo-Croatian čkȃlj / чка̑љ (although difficult on phonetic grounds) or more likely from a Vulgar Latin *squaleus (later reduced to *scalius), from Latin squaleo. Cf. Spanish escajo, Portuguese escalheiro. Less likely from Greek σκαλίας (skalías).
