From Middle High German sūmeselic. Equivalent to obsolete Saumsal (“neglect, tardiness”) + -ig; the former from säumen (older also saumen) + -sal. Now sometimes associated with unrelated selig (“happy, carefree”), thus “neglect-happy” as it were.
