Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish صاپلانمق (ṣaplanmaḳ, to become possessed of a handle, to stick in or into, to sink and stick into mud),[1][2] derived from Proto-Turkic *sapla- (to attach a handle), from Proto-Turkic *sap (hilt of a knife or sword),[3][4] morphologically sap + -la + -n + -mak.
