From Proto-Vietic *k-rəŋ (“horn”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *d₂raŋ (“horn”). Cognate with Central Vietnamese trừng, Muong Bi khầng, Mon ဂြၚ် (krɛ̀aŋ, “horn, tusk”), Khmu [Cuang] cndrɨŋ, Khasi reng, Kharia ɖeɽeŋ, Santali ᱫᱤᱨᱤᱧ (diriñ).
Compare also Garo grong, which, according to Blench (2013), presents an Austroasiatic substratum, while Sagart (2008) considered it to be a cognate of Chinese 角 (OC *C.[k]ˤrok) (B-S).
