From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *sjej-s (“know”). Cognate with Burmese သိ (si., “know”), Tibetan ཤེས་པ (shes pa, “know”), Nuosu ꌧ (syp, “know”), Western Lalu sa̠²¹, Nusu su̱⁵³, Lisu ꓢꓷꓸ (sɤ́), Hani hev, Naxi see, Tangut 𗓂 (*sjɨ²), Japhug sɯz, Situ ʃi and Tedim Chin thei. Compare Yunnan Lhao Vo sɛ⁵⁵, Zaiwa se, Longchuan Achang sa³⁵ and Hpon ʃì’.
