From Middle High German sündigen, sundigen, alteration (due to Middle High German sundic, sundec, suntic (sinful) > German sündig) of Old High German suntōn, sunteōn. Compare Old Saxon sundiōn (to sin), Old English syngian (to sin), Old Norse syndga (to sin).
