Inherited from Old Swedish riuþ, ruþ, ryþ, rydh.[1] Ablaut from röja (“[to] clear”).[2] First attested in 1525. [3]
Compare with Icelandic rjóðr, Norwegian rjod, Old High German riod, and German ried, reut.[3]
