From ringja (“ring”) + på (“on”) + springa (“run”), where ring is the imperative form of ringja or its infinitive with dialectal apocope. Alternatively, from the noun ring n (“a door bell ring or a phone call”).
Literally, “ring (on the door bell), while running”, although it may be accepted to use a bicycle.
